In 2016, we held a spatial design exhibit featuring works of washi paper in collaboration with the Swiss design studio Atelier Oï at Spiral, a cultural complex located in Aoyama, Tokyo. We had been friends with Atelier Oï for some time, and when we coincidentally both started working on different projects using washi, we decided to hold a joint exhibit. An ancient paper tradition with many unique techniques, washi has evolved in close association with daily life. Honminoshi Garden, which utilizes traditional honmino washi paper, and Haru Stuck-On Design;, which incorporates industrial technology, are both extensions of this tradition. The Embassy of Switzerland in Japan, Gifu Prefecture, and Nitoms, Inc. (Nitto Group) used two types of washi paper in a collaborative project that created “a space of light” in which Swiss and Japanese sensibilities, tradition, and technology were in harmony. With Haru Stuck-On Design;, we created Light in Light, expressing intermingling light and darkness on a 20-meter-long wall in an abstract way.
